Who is this course for?
This is a course designed to provide an appropriate level of training for qualified counsellors to develop the necessary competencies to work with children aged 4 -11.
The course is a 5 day modular course using a three-fold basis of training:
- Development of theoretical understanding – this will focus on attachment theory, theory of childhood and the value of play using developments in neuroscience which can be mapped onto theoretical positions.
- An experiential process – the course will include a series of hands on activities using materials and equipment most suited to working with children. The course will also feature group discussions at the end of each day, designed to promote reflection and the ongoing adoption of reflective practice. Some group interactions will take a format similar to that which may be experienced during supervision of casework with children.
- A skills induction – The course will introduce participants to a range of specific skills which can be used with children including art and play therapy, sand tray, puppets, story-telling and metaphors, establishing boundaries and a therapeutic relationship and making endings.
It will also consider solutions-focused working methods, directive versus non-directive work and the skills underpinning the development of a therapeutic alliance with children.
The course aims to provide qualified counsellors with the skills needed to work with children with social or emotional difficulties. It is specifically designed to support school based, one to one counselling, but will support work with primary aged children in any setting.
The course welcomes counsellors who have trained in different modalities and will encourage participants to share their own experience and theoretical bias, methodologies and insights.
The content tends towards integrative, person-centred and psychodynamic principles, however there is no expectation of prior knowledge or understanding of any one of these modalities.
