Families

Fegans cares holistically for the whole family, through counselling children and supporting parents.

Counselling

Our fully qualified counselling teams work both in schools and in our own offices. We work with children from 4 to 18 and their families. We offer individual counselling, play therapy, and family therapy. Our counsellors are employed, paid and provided with a full support package of clinical excellence.

Our counsellors deal with abuse, anger, anxiety, bereavement, bullying, depression and self-harm amongst many other issues. Counselling sessions with younger children are play based, using art and imaginative play to help them to express themselves and move forwards.

What is counselling?

During our lifetimes, most people experience difficulties and distress. Counselling is an opportunity to build a safe, trusting relationship with a trained or qualified professional so that you can discuss anything that is troubling you in a safe, confidential, non-judgmental environment. At Fegans, all of our counsellors are qualified professionals. The counsellor will help you to look at your issues, explore options, and find ways of coping with and resolving your difficulties.

Children can be helped to work through their difficulties by the use of play therapy, where the therapist offers a safe place to express troubling emotions in a creative and therapeutic way using play.

Parent Support

We provide emotional and practical support to parents and carers who are finding it difficult to cope. We offer one to one and group sessions where parents are free to discuss their problems without fear of judgement.

FAQs ABOUT FEGANS’ SERVICES

How can I access Fegans’ parenting support services?

Individual parenting support can be accessed through Early Help.  You can be referred to Early Help through schools, GPs, Social Services and Children’s Centres.

If schools feel there is sufficient demand for support amongst parents, the school can use their budget to co-ordinate Fegans’ group parenting sessions.

Do you work with children with additional needs / in special schools?

Yes, we have counsellors in special schools and many of the counsellors work with and support vulnerable children in mainstream school, many of whom do have additional needs.

Do you provide group counselling?

Most of our work is one to one as the issues we deal with in sessions are complex and personal.

You are a Christian charity, do you evangelise?

No we do not. Our counsellors are members of the BACP and abide by their guidelines.

How long do you work with clients?

There are no restrictions for time spent with a counsellor, it is very client led so counselling continues for as short or as long as needed. On average a client is seen for around 12 sessions but this can be much shorter or longer depending on the complexity of issues involved.

Are parents notified of what is discussed in a counselling session?

The child is entitled to confidentiality in the same way as an adult client would be, however the child is free to discuss anything from the session with their parent or carer.  If the counsellor identifies issues that would be healthy for the child to discuss with their parent they would encourage the child to do so.
