Fegans hero-worships single parents, predominantly, but not exclusively women. We think many of the distressing statistics that tell a tale of national childhood destruction are held at bay largely by this unsung and often maligned group of precious people. Burdens that are heavy when carried by two parents become crushing when borne by one, particularly when carried by the parents of the 3.8m children living in long term poverty.
Yet the vast majority of the UK’s children are thriving, with most estimates saying that at least 90% of our children are in good shape. Extrapolating this data means that hundreds of thousands of lone parents are succeeding in every important aspect of raising their children. This in itself is testimony to the incredible job that single parents do, and we honour them for it.
